(*SIGH*) What is postmodernism? Culture…Diversity…Science? What does all this have to do with postmodernism? POSTMODERNISM!! In the beginning of the semester we were all introduced to a new idea/concept…hence postmodernism. It was difficult to understand at first but as the school year went on and we read more text it slowly started to make sense. J There are many aspects to what postmodernism, for example, it is small little narratives combined to explain the big picture or some of it. Also it stresses on the fact the science will soon figure out the meaning of life and why everything is happening. Postmodernism can also relate to all the texts we have read this semester; Brave New World, Cat’s Cradle, 1984 and Maus II. J From the article Modernity and Postmodernism, the author states, “We must stop trying to discover the undiscoverable (absolute truth) and openly acknowledge that what might be right to one person may not be right to another. Acceptance, not criticism; tolerance, not bigotry; and love, not hatred, must become the guiding principles of our lives." We all have our beliefs, customs, traditions and religion that we all follow just because we have our own beliefs that doesn’t mean that they are better than any other culture or belief out there today. Stories have been passed down from generation to generation nobody knows for sure if they are true but we just take our ancestors WORD for it because we trust them. Whether it is the bible or what I believe in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji we all are different and unique….. “What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within. Pride in one's status is like poison - holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.” -Sri Guru Granth Sahib quote
J BYEE postmodernism lol
Sorry I think I went off topic a little but hopefully you guys understood where I was coming from. J
I have to say, I am already starting to like this post already. The beginning talking about culture, diversity, and science, they are the three biggest issues dealing with Postmodernism. Without culture, Postmodernism will not be able to stress the importance of truths and different societies. Without diversity, Postmodernism will not be able to strike down the abuses of centers and their marginalizing. And without science, Postmodernism will not be able to say that the scientific quest to find an answer to everything is impossible. The quote you used from the article saying “We must stop trying to discover the undiscoverable (absolute truth) and openly acknowledge that what might be right to one person may not be right to another. Acceptance, not criticism; tolerance, not bigotry; and love, not hatred, must become the guiding principles of our lives" (Modernity and Postmodernism) is right on the money! This quote really embodies everything Postmodernism is about.
ReplyDeleteVERY SWELL!!!!! Who cares if you went off topic a little it sounds all good to me. The ending just made my day because i like to hear mellow soothing words like that, it also should be shared with other Americans out there since they are so incompetent about their own lives. Any who, acceptance is what i also mentioned in my blog and i agree with you on how we humans should accept others' beliefs no matter what. Life is just life and most people in the world put all these lies in their heads so they have something to follow and what they follow is not really an open-minded decision sometimes, and they should open their eyes and see how the different people in the world should be loved too. Forget all the materialistic things in life because what truly matters is the individuality of others and it helps to know that there are some people like Buddha or Gandhi who will give anyone a hand. Stop trying to discover the truth when there really isn't one is a good way of telling people in the world how silly they are for trying to find it. All the differences in the world should become one one day when the world ends... lol jk idk when it will end but seriously Postmodernism could not be explained in a better way than thiS!!! XD
ReplyDelete<3 PamBAM!!!!!!!
Ok Navdeep your blog is some what similar to mine so it made sense to me!! I really liked when you said that “we must stop trying to discover the undiscoverable and openly acknowledge that we might be right to one person but may not be right to another”. This statement that you said is what I believe defines postmodernism because it is very true that people have different ideas and so when someone thinks a certain way to strongly, they may just not have been shown the other side to the idea. (I hope that sentence made sense haha). I also think that people are just closed-minded and so once they make up there mind about something, then when another person comes around with a different opinion, they may think that they are wrong, but in actuality who really knows who is the right one!! Well, I liked reading your blog; it was very interesting!
