GOOD NITE!!!! :)

Maus by Art Spiegelman is a very interesting, graphic, and EYE opening book. The way Spiegelman presents this book is in a very unique and different manner than any other books..... COMETIC BOOK? At first when I started reading this book I didn’t expect it to be good but just an average comic book. After reading a few pages I was hooked and reading away! When I first saw this book, my first expression was it’s a comic book, J second it is short, I didn’t realize or think how this book can change my point of view and the way I looked at the holocaust. Discussing Maus in class helped me understand this book and give me ideas that I never have thought of…. For example… RATS->CATS->DOGS… when we started to talk about this it gave me some very good ideas that I could write my essay on. Discussing this book in class also helped me with some ideas. For example, when we talked about the idea that Art is annoyed and sick of his father sprung upon some ideas. Those ideas included that Art was one of many reasons why his father acts the way he does. Art only goes to his father when he wants to know something about the holocaust. Art pushes his father away by putting him situations that make his dad stress or uncomfortable about recalling the past. For example, when there was some cereal left that was not going to be eaten, Art’s father decide to return it instead of throwing it away and wasting it. “Mickey Mouse is the most miserable ideal ever” is a quote that I will also like to analyze for my body and explain how it relates to MAUS.

These are two ideas that I may consider writing about!!! J

Thesis1: In Maus by Art Spiegelman is a very interesting book about the holocaust that takes comic books and writing to a whole new level. The representation of animals…”Masks” is presented in a very unique but yet true way.

Thesis2: In Maus by Art Spiegelman is a very interesting book, it test a father-son relationship that has been walking on thin ice.

POSSIBLE THESIS!!! :p

hopefully guyz were able to understand this!

GOOGLE???

Is Google Making us Stupid?

By

Nicholas Carr

“Skimming”… “Reading Blog(s)”…”Scanning headlines”…..or “watching videos” are some of the things we do on the internet! No matter what we are doing, busy or free, sometimes we just find ourselves clicking to the internet.

“The company has declared that its mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” It seeks to develop “the perfect search engine,” which it defines as something that “understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want.” This quote was from Nicholas Carr’s article, Is Google Making us Stupid. Looking at this quote I can’t help think…. what I have used Google for and how it has helped me throughout my life. Ok I do understand that some of the information on Google may or is pointless but it helps so many people each and everyday. Umm as far as “Making us stupid,” I do think we may use it a little too much… 10 billion searches a month, I think according to the movie clip we watched….”DID YOU KNOW?” “Fashion” or “ Reading Gossiping” is were we might be getting brained washed! :0

Although some might agree with this article and say Google is making us stupid and some might disagree and say that it gives us information which increases our knowledge. However… “In Google’s view, information is a kind of commodity, a utilitarian resource that can be mined and processed with industrial efficiency. The more pieces of information we can “access” and the faster we can extract their gist, the more productive we become as thinkers.” Using the internet and everything it has to offer it does help us with information and to do research. The downside is sometimes we may get everything easily and not work hard or not do as much critical thinking as we should! L

Yet without YAHOO… GOOGLE… ASK… and who knows how many search engines ….. We would have trouble trying to figure out some of the simplest things!!

YO!! :)

MY BLOG!!

;)

DID YOU KNOW???

NO I DIDN’T KNOW…. Everything in the video we watched in class was crazy and funny at some points.

In Alan Kirby article it states that “postmodernism is dead and buried. In its place comes a new paradigm of authority and knowledge formed under the pressure of new technologies and contemporary social forces.” The video that we watched in class is a perfect example of this, it introduces new idea and subject(s) that no one would ever thought about. Going back to Kirby, he talks about the “authority and knowledge formed under the pressure of new technologies,” this is so true when someone is under the pressure or on a time crunch they come up with the weirdest and craziest ideas but yet they work… in our time today we think about how people who lived years ago and find it strange but yet there survival techniques worked and we progressed to become a better society. What does this all mean? Well we have progressed and evolved in so many different ways that people too are starting to move forward. Although we may have started to move on and embrace our future that doesn’t mean you have to forget your traditions or beliefs. J

A paradigm is “a set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.” I don’t think we are moving into a more paradigm society because there are so many people that are not afraid to express there opinions and are very open-minded. … that having a “set society” wouldn’t flow there way.

In my opinion, I don’t see a change in the relationship between knowledge and power. I like to view it as the more knowledge one has determines the power they have. (Hopefully you guys understand that).

YO! cat's cradle! :)

BLOG TIME!

Cat’s Cradle!!!!

J

OK!!

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut seems like a pretty interesting and funny BOOK! J Although in the beginning it might seem to be boring but as you read on, you begin to understand it and have a laugh or two (LoL)! One of the parts that I thought was funny is….”The lady claimed to understand God and His ways of working perfectly. She could not understand why anyone should b puzzled about what had been or about what was going to be. And yet, when u showed her a blueprint of the doghouse I proposed to build, she said to me, I’m sorry, but I never could read one of those things” (Vonnegut, 4).When I read this I thought to myself what a WERID lady… she can understand everything else in this world…galaxy but not a simple picture of a doghouse. This kind of relates to postmodernism you can say… by everyone has his or her point of views some think they know everything awhile others don’t care.

J Moving on

“Anyway, Father looked at that loop of string for a while, and then his fingers started playing with it. His fingers made the string figure called a cat’s cradle.” Cat’s cradle is an unending game just like monopoly. A group can play monopoly up to four to five hours and it can be no where near the end…. trust me I know this. As we get into the game we find ways and strategies to get most of properties as we can… taking a simple game such as monopoly or cat‘s cradle we turn it into a more complex and time consuming game. In other words, we just try to make wise choices so that the simplest things don’t turn into the most complex ones!

Ummm

Hopefully you enjoyed this blog???

:) BLOG

Coming up with your topic and developing your thesis...
OK LETS DO THIS!..
:)

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley..... there are many ideas that are popping in my mind, that i might consider writing about! Here is one that I might consider......
TECHNOLOGY and how it is used to control the society are one of the few ideas I might write my essay on. Although Brave New World is a very different and controlling society it is very interesting to read about. For example, how "human beings" are produced or shall i say "made!" I mean who would have thought about 50-100 identical human beings. CRAZY i tell!!!! I understand we use technology today to help many couples conceive but 50-100 kids .... the closest we probably have got is 8! Anyways other than technology the drug SOMA is a great influence on Brave New World! The drug is able to control the World State populace, it symbolizes the use of the instant gratification. Using technology to create a drug like"SomA" is clever... very clever. This drug helps the society in Brave New World alive and running. Taking soma whether you are female or male will help make you feel better. And for the women it prevents pregnancy. It encourages one night stands and being promiscuous.
MY THESIS.....(DUH!!) follows below.......
LOL
;)
As technology and the use of it advances, it makes it easier to control a society like Brave New World.
Using other texts...
1984 by George Orwell, Postmodernism by Jim Powell, and Shakespeare's text will help give my thesis support and hopefully keep my readers in tune and help keep there attention. Comparing "1984" and "Brave New World" the societies in both books are very similar. In both books, technology is able to help or control its society. Talking about myths and narratives (Postmodernism) leads into Shakespeare. For example, the use of his text might be forbidden in the book but many of the character(s) still use it. Which also impacts the decisions they make.

BLOG TIME!!!

.... BLOG TIME!!!
:)

We all belong to a different discourse community. Our traditions, beliefs, and customs are all different. Growing up we were all told myths and narratives about god(s) or supernatural heroes. These stories helped us realized where we come from and attach us to our culture. "The myth requires no authorization or legitimization other than itself. The myth defines what has the right to be said and done in the culture" (Powell, 25). A myth is a traditional or legendary story without having a determinable basis of facts or an explanation it is usually regarding a hero or an event. For example, we have read or seen Hercules, it represents the belief that good will overcome evil. Many other myths/ narratives are also based on this as well. "Japanese heard a chant about the formation of Heaven and Earth from a Primordial Egg- they are listening to narrative, to popular stories, myths, legends and tales" (Powell,240). A narrative is a story or series numbers of events, experiences whether true or false. The quote explains the creation of earth and heaven through an egg..........*sigh* interesting very interesting....
Why do cultures create stories you ask?
Well in my opinion I think a culture is like a story. It has been through alot to be accepted among many other communities and culture. By telling us stories it helps us have a better understanding from where we come from and who we are. These stories (myth/narratives) help give us good morals and values they also prevent us from making the same mistakes. For example, we learn history to understand what made the world what it is.... ( background). It also helps us learn from our mistakes and to avoid similar ones. Without culture and history we would be lost. Without culture and history we wouldn't learn anything. Without culture and history there really wouldn't be a future.

BRAVE NEW WORLD

OK lets do this...

Who would have thought creating identical babies by the thousands through a machine? Strange...werid...crazy might not be enough words to describe "Brave New World," once you start reading it. Curiosity keeps on building as you read further into the novel. To live in a world where you can't express any emotions, or are shocked when you hear the words, mother and father is unthinkable. " We also predestine and condition. we decant our babies as socialized human beings, as Alphas or Epsilons, as future sewage workers or future...." He was going to say "future world controllers," but correcting himself, said "future Directors of Hatcheries," instead ( Huxley, 13). In our world today, we have many classes, the rich, the medium, and the poor. We ourselves, determine which one we fall into as time progresses. The knowledge we have gathered and decisions we make help determine where we belong in society. Where as in " Brave New World", they make the choice for you. I think this is unethical to do so because labeling a person rich or poor without knowing there full potential is very wrong. Especially if you are going to label them when they have not even entered the world yet. This basically just throws off being unique and your own person. Well you could look on the positive side to this at least you don't have to worry about identity theft. Personally, I believe living in this kind of society is insane. Comparing our world to the one in the book is very different. In a community, where the citizens believe that marriage and commitment hold no meanings is very different from ours. All the citizens are encouraged and engaged in a one night stand. In reality, most of us believe in love, marriages, and commitment. We are also encouraged to wait until we get married. Although the community described in this book is very unusual compared to ours, the book is still very interesting!

Planning a party can be just as a tough task as making a lesson plan. In order to make a lesson plan, you need a curriculum to follow. Like a lesson plan, it takes time and hard work to come up with a curriculum. Favoring or being biast toward a subject can have a major impact. You have to be open-minded and considerate of others. It is important not to bring politics and religion into school. This matters because you can offend some one's belief or religion and not know it. For example, "The Conservative reviewers say they believe that children must learn that America's founding principles are biblical " ( Simon, 1). There are many people that would disagree with this since they don't believe in the bible. Where as some would agree and want this to be taught to there children. Personally I think there are classes students can take at school for there own knowlege regarding there religion. For example. at Clovis High School, we have a bible lit class and people who want to take it can. Learning about how are nation is strong today is important but we shouldn't just give all the credit to one source. Just because our founding fathers were christian doesnt make this nation christian based. Traditions, customs, values, religion effect our daily lives, they make who we are today. The United States is also called the "melting pot" because we are a very diverse nation.
